B. STRATEGIC PLANNING
- Re-engineering of Processes
Introducing changes and altering people´s daily working routine, is not an easy task. Clear goals, a practicable time schedule and a good action plan provide the responsible managers with something to hold on to.
Experienced “change managers” can assist with gearing the changes towards the general policy plan, setting up a step-by-step approach, and successfully integrating the new procedures into the every-day routine.
- Maintenance Schedule & Program
Maintenance does not always receive the attention it deserves. It enhances the life span of the equipment. More importantly, however, it can help run production without breakdowns and provides more business security.
With regard to food safety and new regulations in the area of product responsibility it is unwise to take major risks in “keeping the cold chain”. Subjects: what can be handled in-house and what should be outsourced, preventive maintenance, interval for minor and extensive maintenance, spare parts strategy, educational level of the technical staff, crisis management, etc.
- Modernization & Upgrading
Each change needs a serious amount of preparation time and a lot of thinking in order to ensure that you maintain a safe and efficient facility. Help of a specialist that will bring a “Modernization Checklist” may be welcome in order to prevent anything being overlooked.
All the generally accepted aspects will be checked. Extra attention will go to handling and storage of perishable food products, whereby the most recent food safety and food quality regulations will be observed. A financial paragraph with investment, return on investment, additional revenues and costs will have to be included as well.
- Curriculum & Course Program Development
Implementing important changes has qualitative or quantitative consequences for the staff. Almost every major investment simultaneously requires training or education of personnel in order to obtain the desired returns. Raising an organization or a whole industry to a higher level takes even more time and energy.
Changing peoples´ attitudes is extremely hard. However, it is a necessary investment, because the people have to do the work. A professionally, custom-made course program is a prerequisite for success.
Sometimes the plan involves a single staff member, but more often it concerns large groups of employees at different levels in the organizations. This requires the design of a curriculum with collective and individual learning goals, a time schedule and concrete suggestions on how the necessary knowledge can be acquired.
- Feasibility Study
Some projects are very complex, come with several alternative solutions or have so much impact that a more extensive comparative study is in order. There will be attention for, among other: the different investment variations including the consequences for depreciation, maintenance and manpower, turnover, and expenses forecasts for the first 5 years, etc. If necessary, project financing and the search for possible grants and investors can be included as well.

- Logistic Concept Development
Once it has been determined that changes in the logistic procedures are necessary, a logistics department needs to be reconstructed or that a new cold store, refrigerated warehouse or distribution center needs to be build, it is essential to make a good analysis of the (future) logistic process.
What needs to happen exactly, which volumes are involved, how many m² and m³ are required, lay-out of the dock space, traditional racks or (partly) automated warehouse, how many doors, what temperature ranges, etc? A material handling plan that guarantees operational efficiency is also on the checklist “Logistic Concept Development”.
